FREE GROCERIES?!

FREE GROCERIES?!

The other day someone asked me how many shares of various consumer staple stocks they’d need to buy in order to use the dividends to pay for their annual grocery bill.

So, I hopped over to ye olde Google and asked what the average American spends per year on groceries. The answer surprised me: $2641? That’s … it? That’s how much I spend on chicken thighs. I feel like that answer isn’t totally accurate, but ya’ know. It is what it is.

I compiled a little list of six dividend paying consumer staple stocks like General Mills, Pepsi, and Hormel. A few notes: Diversity is key. I don’t believe in putting all of your eggs into one basket (get it? because groceries?). Or in this case: buying just one dividend paying stock.

I also don’t think people should rush out and buy six different consumer staple stocks. Nobody wants to be overweight one sector.

The idea, more generally, is to think about how a diverse portfolio can help you pay for your expenses as you get older and retire. You can watch the TikTok here.
